2023 GLDA Summit highlights the importance of business value through analytics

The 11th annual Great Lakes Data & Analytics Summit will be held on Thursday, April 27th at the Troy Marriott. This one-day event brings together analytics professionals from across the state to learn from industry experts and your peers about how to get the most value out of your data. This event is a labor of love, and each year brings a new mix of sponsors, speakers, and topics. This year, we are particularly excited about our line-up of speakers as we’ve observed some interesting connecting themes across several of the presentations.

As a local data & analytics consulting company in this line of work for a long time, we’ve witnessed time and again that data and analytics professionals are ever hungry – starving even – to participate in the business value chain that data and analytics can provide. Too often, however, even senior analytics leadership types are tasked with deploying the ‘if-you-build-it-they-will-come self-service data platform’, or ‘please go build this suite of dashboards for Department X’. Despite exposure to a great many business use cases throughout their respective careers, many analytics folks seem to find themselves on the outside looking in terms of driving real and measurable business value with analytics.

So, let’s change that!

We are excited this year to have some good friends talk about this theme during the event. As our morning keynote, Erik Meier from Sandler EAM Consulting, is going to talk about the psychology of internal selling within an organization, how to ask the right questions, how to promote your great ideas, and how to eliminate the ‘buyer/seller dance’ that typically results in an endless hamster wheel of unproductive conversations. Later in the day, Aaron Wilkerson from Carhartt is going to talk about his unique experiences around proactively engaging with business customers to align analytics strategy with business value before analytics investments are finalized. And finally, our closing keynote, Alberto Cairo from the University of Miami, will discuss how expert data visualization and storytelling can drive real business results and value. As we continue to plow ahead during these ‘uncertain times’ the selling of business value and measuring results have never been more important.

We are also looking forward to exploring the other themes that are definite undercurrents in this year’s incarnation of the Summit: an ever-growing dependency on machine learning and AI, leveraging analytics expertise and technology to solve real world problems in the community, managing supply chain disruptions, and using analytics to improve customer satisfaction.

Let’s raise the bar!
